Dules is an old female, she has permanent injury to her neck where she was tied up and beaten and a tag in her ear, someone tried to sell her for meat. She had no shelter from all weathers and her coat was matted with sores. Donkeys must have shelter from rain and bad weather. The horse dentist assessed that she was suffering severe pain from her teeth condition. Over multiple visits her teeth have been corrected and many removed. She has supplementary soft food to ensure she takes in enough nourishment. She took a long time to come right. Head down, no life to her, no interaction with the others, standing still and silent. It was painful to witness.
However, she is now a fully integrated member of the Donkey herd and has a special bond with another female donkey called Susie. Her head is up, she plays, runs about with the herd and rolls in the sunshine. I cannot help but smile and feel relief every time I see her.
